Municipal solid waste consists of wide variety of waste materials such as household waste like food, paper, plastic, metal, electronics or furniture etc., commercial waste from restaurants, hotels, schools or offices etc., hazardous waste from hospitals or other waste such as batteries. ​ The challenges to proper recycling or disposal of MSW are lack of awareness among people, wide variety of materials, disparity in waste generation volumes and disposal among 5 different regions of Brazil, huge dependence on landfills/ dumps and absence of producer accountability for recycling.
