Problem Statement: In Myanmar, one of the world’s top rice producing nations, there is a critical environmental issue – the harmful practice of openly burning leftover rice waste after harvests. This age-old practice, while efficient in clearing fields, causes severe air pollution, contributing to respiratory illnesses and ecological damage. The uncontrolled burning of rice waste releases harmful particulate matter, greenhouse gases, and toxins into the atmosphere, leading to adverse health effects for both rural communities and the wider environment. Additionally, this practice depletes the soil of valuable organic matter, reducing its long-term fertility.

Solution Statement

Proposed Solution: To address this pressing environmental issue, our Sustainable Rice Waste Utilization project presents an innovative solution. We aim to convert the rice waste into eco-friendly furniture and decorations, thereby mitigating the harmful consequences of open burning. By collecting rice waste that would otherwise be incinerated and using it as a primary raw material, we plan to manufacture sustainable products that are not only environmentally friendly but also water and termite resistant. This transformation of waste into valuable goods not only eliminates the waste burning problem but also provides a constructive use for a previously discarded resource.
