Problem Statement

Working families in urban Ghana lose a day’s earnings to get routine care. The median wait at a private clinic is 55 minutes, results come back on paper that no other provider will accept, and no single record follows the patient between visits, so tests get repeated and paid for twice. The employers funding occupational health for those same workers get nothing back: no absence data, no utilisation, no view of whether hypertension and diabetes in their workforce are actually controlled. Underneath both sits an administrative failure. 22% of insurance claims are rejected or queried and settlement runs 120 days, so providers price for the float and insured patients still pay out of pocket. Akoma Health gives both sides one verified record, keyed to the Ghana Card, with same-day results and a claim that clears first time.

Proposed Solution

Akoma Health is a five-site primary care and diagnostics network in Ghana that runs on one verified patient record instead of paper. Every patient is registered against their Ghana Card, so one identity follows them across all five clinics. They book and pay by phone through mobile money, get lab and imaging results in an app the same day, and see a clinician by video for follow-ups. Employers who cover those workers get a dashboard showing utilisation, absence and whether chronic conditions in their workforce are controlled. Behind that, a claims layer validates coding and eligibility before anything reaches the national insurer, and stock is replenished through Ghana’s existing drone logistics network rather than a fleet we would have to own. We build one thing ourselves: the patient front door. Everything else is bought or rented on open clinical standards, so any vendor can be replaced.

Business Idea Assessment

Akoma Health presents a comprehensive and innovative solution to improve healthcare access and management in Ghana. The integration of patient records with the Ghana Card, mobile payment options, and digital health services streamlines the patient experience and enhances efficiency. The incorporation of employer dashboards and claims validation adds value to both patients and businesses. Leveraging Ghana’s drone logistics network for stock replenishment is a strategic move that reduces operational costs. The scalability and flexibility of the business model, relying on open clinical standards, offer adaptability and potential for growth. One strength of Akoma Health is its focus on utilizing existing infrastructure and technologies, such as the Ghana Card and drone logistics network, which can lead to cost savings and quicker implementation. The emphasis on digital solutions like mobile payments and telemedicine aligns with current trends and consumer preferences, enhancing the overall user experience. Furthermore, the subscription-based business model provides a recurring revenue stream and fosters long-term relationships with customers. However, potential risks may include data security and privacy concerns, regulatory challenges, and the need for robust network connectivity in remote areas. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to invest in cybersecurity measures, compliance with healthcare regulations, and infrastructure development to ensure reliable service delivery across all five sites. Additionally, market education and awareness campaigns may be necessary to promote the benefits of digital healthcare services and gain trust among the target audience. To differentiate further, Akoma Health could consider partnerships with local healthcare providers or insurance companies to expand its reach and services. Developing personalized health plans or wellness programs tailored to individual or corporate needs could also attract a broader customer base. Moreover, continuous innovation in telemedicine technology and data analytics to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency could set Akoma Health apart in the competitive healthcare landscape.
