Problem Statement

Working families in urban Ghana lose a day’s earnings to get routine care. The median wait at a private clinic is 55 minutes, results come back on paper that no other provider will accept, and no single record follows the patient between visits, so tests get repeated and paid for twice. The employers funding occupational health for those same workers get nothing back: no absence data, no utilisation, no view of whether hypertension and diabetes in their workforce are actually controlled. Underneath both sits an administrative failure. 22% of insurance claims are rejected or queried and settlement runs 120 days, so providers price for the float and insured patients still pay out of pocket. Akoma Health gives both sides one verified record, keyed to the Ghana Card, with same-day results and a claim that clears first time.

Proposed Solution

Akoma Health is a five-site primary care and diagnostics network in Ghana that runs on one verified patient record instead of paper. Every patient is registered against their Ghana Card, so one identity follows them across all five clinics. They book and pay by phone through mobile money, get lab and imaging results in an app the same day, and see a clinician by video for follow-ups. Employers who cover those workers get a dashboard showing utilisation, absence and whether chronic conditions in their workforce are controlled. Behind that, a claims layer validates coding and eligibility before anything reaches the national insurer, and stock is replenished through Ghana’s existing drone logistics network rather than a fleet we would have to own. We build one thing ourselves: the patient front door. Everything else is bought or rented on open clinical standards, so any vendor can be replaced.

Business Idea Assessment

The idea behind Akoma Health Ltd. in Ghana has several strengths. By centralizing patient records through the Ghana Card, it streamlines healthcare processes, making it efficient and convenient for both patients and healthcare providers. The integration of mobile payment systems and telemedicine services adds a modern touch to the traditional healthcare system. Additionally, the utilization of existing drone logistics networks for stock replenishment shows innovation and cost-effectiveness. However, there are potential risks and areas for improvement to consider. One significant risk could be data security and privacy concerns, especially when dealing with sensitive patient information. Ensuring robust cybersecurity measures and compliance with data protection regulations will be crucial. Moreover, the reliance on technology, such as mobile apps and telemedicine, may pose challenges for individuals with limited access to smartphones or internet connectivity, which could limit the reach of the service. To differentiate and enhance the business model further, consider offering personalized healthcare plans or wellness programs tailored to individual patients or corporate clients. Providing incentives for preventive care or health maintenance could set Akoma Health apart in the market. Additionally, focusing on community outreach and education to promote healthcare awareness could help bridge the gap for underserved populations. Collaborating with local health authorities or NGOs could also help in expanding reach and impact.
